From a day trip to a family-owned vineyard or the Saturday stroll to stock up at the local farmers market, the thought of what farms provide is profound. Although farms serve as an essential component to our lives and are critical to our health and wellness, they also experience some of the highest levels of vulnerability on our planet.

The dependence on proper amounts of rainfall and temperature consistency is the literal difference between life and death for crops around the world. In recent years, developed countries with a good farm infrastructure had more than a 17% yield decrease because of climate changes (Nelson et al, 2013). Due to their massive scale, developed farms continue to endure the declination in crop yield. However, small farms, particularly in emerging countries, cannot replicate such a response, and farmers who view their crop yields as a critical resource to both themselves and their communities are suddenly left empty-handed.

Whether it’s the network of knowledge sharing, education on climate change trends, or information on best practices, large-scale farmers have access to resources that small-scale farmers do not. Additionally, one important skill that is often absent for small-scale farmers is the ability to perform climate risk assessment, which can be an integral factor in obtaining funding from financial institutions. With small-scale farmers experiencing these disparities around the globe, a worldwide solution is needed to combat the effects climate change is having on this industry.

Meet Agrolly, the 2020 Call for Code Global Challenge winning solution built by a group of Pace University students with diverse backgrounds and experience from Taiwan, Brazil, Mongolia, and India. Agrolly aims to fill in the information gap so that farmers with less resources available to them can still make more educated decisions, obtain the necessary financing, and improve their economic outcome. Using IBM® Cloud Object Storage, IBM Watson® Studio, IBM Watson Assistant, and The Weather Company technologies, the platform provides a full service solution to execute climate risk assessments. Featured in the platform is a long-term rainfall forecast, which is tested periodically for increased accuracy, in addition to crop water requirements for the Food and Agriculture Organization for the United Nations (FAO), which is tailored for the location of each farmer, type of crop, and stage of the farm. Agrolly also provides a forum module allowing farmers to exchange information and solutions and allows text and picture uploads. Lastly, the Agrolly platform includes crop-risk algorithms allowing for risk assessments to be executed by small farmers.

The Agrolly team is fighting back against climate change. Farms serve as the tentpole to every community, and Agrolly remains steadfast in using tech for good to help farmers around the world do what they do best.

The unknown is scary. Whether it’s taking that leap of faith into a new career path, or becoming a parent for the first time — there are more questions than there are answers, and this can be unsettling. When the world was struck by COVID-19, the unknown upended our way of life and served as a conduit for anxiety, stress, and uncertainty. One industry that felt the rippling effects early on from the wake of COVID-19 was the small business sector.

Due to changing governmental regulations and restrictions that continue to evolve due to the storm of the unknown that is COVID-19, small businesses quickly feel the impacts and experience loss of income and are forced to cut staff, reduce hours of operation, or close-up shop entirely. Around the world, small and medium-sized businesses play an essential role in keeping economies afloat, and the need for a solution to fortify this segment of companies is imperative, now more than ever.

Enter Business Buddy, a Call for Code solution providing a one-stop-shop to deliver personalized and responsive COVID-19 updates to small businesses. The Business Buddy team comes from the University of Sydney in Australia, where they report that small and medium-sized businesses make up 90% of the Australian economy. The Business Buddy team did their due diligence to find the root cause to how and why local businesses were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Through their research, they found that 30% of businesses had to reduce staff numbers, and 9 out of 10 businesses expressed solvency concerns over the next 4 – 6 months. Through the team’s engagement with local businesses, they discovered that the major pain point for most companies was not the lack of governmental support, but the ineffective communication channels. Business owners have not been able to access the full breadth of support because information on different fiscal relief programs was scattered across multiple websites, making it prone for businesses to miss opportunities to find assistance. It was this pain point that the Business Buddy team decided to combat – and ultimately, build a solution to address it.

Using IBM® Cloud Foundry, IBM Cloudant, and IBM Watson® Assistant, Business Buddy allows small and medium-sized businesses to sign up on their platform, submit information specific to their business, and receive guidance soon after through the ‘My Buddy’ feature. ‘My Buddy’ makes a preliminary determination of their eligibility to various governmental programs, based on their profile, and guides the business to make a more conclusive determination by assessing the business against specific eligibility requirements. If a business is deemed to be eligible for an opportunity, the platform provides easy access to the respective application portal. ‘My Buddy’ also maintains updated information on newly available programs so that businesses can stay apprised of the latest opportunities to leverage at any given time.

The Business Buddy team demonstrates the power of Call for Code, using tech for good and providing a helping hand to communities that are battling the unknown.

Safe Queue Participant location: United States

Nowadays, standing in lines can have some serious consequences. Whether it’s maintaining six feet of social distance, or wearing a mask correctly, some people continue to not follow current directives — and this can put people at risk. From the trip to the grocery store to picking up medicine from the local pharmacy, we soon realize how integral standing in lines truly is as we shop for daily or weekly essentials. With lines now being moved outdoors to maintain reduced occupancy counts in the respective building, people are not only at risk of the COVID-19 virus, but weather conditions as well.

This is where Safe Queue comes into play. Safe Queue is a simple app that works using QR codes and your location to hold your place in line while you wait nearby, say in a car in a parking lot. After you get within 1000 feet of your destination, Safe Queue uses your GPS location data to allow you to add yourself to a virtual queue. You can stay a safe distance away from the location, even remaining in your car while tracking your spot in line. When it’s your turn, you can approach the establishment, and the person operating the door can confirm your entry based on a QR code issued by the Safe Queue app. You can then enter the building without ever having to physically wait in a queue. The app is built on simplicity and privacy. At no point is any personal information collected. When it’s your turn to enter, you simply show your phone at the front of the line and can gain access — no registration required.

The app comes from Dave Chura, Founder of Enclayve, who got his inspiration from Lady Gaga to turn his passion into purpose and participate in the 2020 Call for Code Global Challenge. Using technologies like IBM® Cloud Foundry, IBM Cloudant, and HERE technologies, Dave Chura looks to expand his solution so that it can have applications in many different environments. Because of its simplicity, it can help anywhere a queue is needed without a defined timed appointment, such as waiting to get on a ride at a theme park or even cutting out the line at the deli counter in a grocery store.

While students are tapping into their remote classrooms and completing their digital assignments this year, parents are finding themselves with some homework of their own. Between their children having several online classes, multiple teachers and assignments, along with various remote learning platforms that each have their own unique kinks, ensuring that their children remain on track quickly becomes challenging work. Adding to these obstacles, parents who either have several kids, work full-time, or might be single, now must deal with the act of juggling all of these priorities simultaneously. While many parents tirelessly search for helpful resources to mitigate the compounding stress that piles up quickly as the school days continue, they are often left empty-handed and overwhelmed. There needs to be a way for working parents to have at-a-glance insight to when class starts, when assignments are due, and how their children are performing — and it needs to be easy to use.

Enter SchoolListIt, an app specifically designed to deliver parents with an easily navigable user experience to receive all the necessary information on their school-aged kids when they need it. The solution comes from Meg Philips, a working mother who like many parents longed for a tool that made it easy to understand what assignments are due and when. With daycare either being closed or not feasible for many families, Meg quickly realized that keeping her children on track with schoolwork, paired with fighting through the confusion of different remote education platforms became a full-time job. Using IBM Watson® Text to Speech and other technologies, the SchoolListIt app can take information from Google Classroom and WordPress sites and turn these into mobile-friendly assignments with due dates. SchoolListIt is also an open platform for teachers and others to share information and offer advice through a secure collaboration platform. The app even works offline for those students who might not have access to a reliable internet connection.

SchoolListIt pulls it all together, so that parents, grandparents, and guardians on the go can stay apprised on their remote learning loved ones. Whether fully in school, entirely remote, blended, or homeschooled, parents balancing work and life now have an app that they can turn to for a helping hand.

SchoolListIt is a prime example of the transformative solutions that surface through Call for Code. While the entire world is impacted by COVID-19, we are all impacted in different ways, and it’s paramount that we are fighting back at every angle.

Did those last minute holiday gifts you rush-shipped make it in time? How about that impulse purchase from your favorite retailer that you wanted on your doorstep in two days? While shipping companies keep up with the demand and incentivize the market with more efficient and affordable services, attention is rarely placed on who actually suffers the brunt of these simple clicks, the environment.

With online shopping growing in popularity, consumers are now using this as their primary method of purchasing goods. This rise in popularity, paired with the onset of COVID-19 that’s keeping everyone at home, has made online shopping even more essential and depended upon. This has rippling effects on the environment as carbon-based combustion grows in concert. Online shopping can be an effortless and fun act for the buyer, but its increased heavy usage calls for a reality check in regards to what it is doing to the world around us.

OffShip is that reality check. By using IBM® Cloud and other technologies, OffShip is a browser extension that monitors items in your shopping basket and estimates their carbon footprint based on the weight and distance traveled. This Call for Code global finalist solution offers you the chance to counteract the carbon footprint using carbon offset credits to a charity of your choice. The solution comes from a Canadian team working at Morgan Stanley, where they discovered that as of 2018, 84% of Canadian internet users had purchased goods or services online. Through their research, they also found that online shopping is more prevalent among younger generations, with some outside projections forecasting that by 2024, the e-commerce market will reach $6.07 trillion USD. This puts even more stress on transportation operations and subsequent environmental impacts that already account for 28% of total greenhouse gas emissions in the United States today, per OffShip’s research.

The OffShip team is making it easier than ever to be in touch with the environment and guide you on the proper steps to help preserve it. We only get one world, and we must do everything we can to treat it the right way. OffShip remains determined to lessen the carbon footprint of online shoppers, one purchase at a time.
