4. How to make $240,000 a year by writing a resume?

Hi, I'm Mary Southern and I'm the founder of Resume Assassin. About 10 years ago, I started Resume Assassin by combining my passions for resume writing, job hunting and serving others.

47d2931691a84994ef8aa1085549b79a.png

I help job seekers find jobs with the world's leading companies.

Before I started Resume Assassin, I wanted to start a company, but I didn't really have any marketing skills. At the same time, I spent a lot of time looking for a job. Finding a job is like a game to me. The thought of landing a job and then writing a compelling story/resume to win an interview was exciting. However, the excitement always ends once a job opportunity is on the table.

Now, I'm turning that burning passion into helping my clients achieve their goals. Many people have come to me very frustrated and want me to help them. With luck and a little skill, I'm doing what I love every day and helping clients achieve their goals while growing my business by 25%+ per year for the past 5 years.

How did you come up with this idea?

I started working on Resume Assassin shortly after my masters. I remember every day after get off work, I would go for a walk with my husband and my puppy to brainstorm a business.

My husband is a multi-talented person, so I pitched him a lot of ideas, but I didn't see any of my skills. Eventually I came up with a few ideas and narrowed it down to dog walking, dog poop cleaning, wine delivery and resume writing.

I know I love writing resumes and finding jobs for myself, but I don't have the confidence to do those things for others. Despite my misgivings, I decided to start doing some research.

I realized right away that I needed a catchy name because all the other company names were generic and boring. They have no brand voice, nor do they have any edge. That's when I thought of the name "Resume Assassin". I immediately thought of a tattooed ninja, which was completely unusual in the world of resume writing services at the time. Luckily, my husband is a brilliant artist and he helped me build an attractive website.

Creating a brand that stands out in a saturated market was one of the best decisions I've ever made.

For the first few months, I worked really hard, figuring out how to market a small business, creating social media, posting flyers all over Austin and getting my business seen.

Little did I know that in the next few years I would go from earning $32,000 a year to over $26,000 a month.

Describe the process of designing your service

During my entrepreneurial journey, I've been lucky enough to make some decisions, and some really bad ones. The first great decision is to contact a resume writing company in Austin to get some insider details.

The company I contacted was willing to chat with me on the phone. I quickly learned that they closed their business for personal reasons, but they gave me some great advice and pointed me to a professional organization created just for resume writers and career coaches.

I quickly joined this professional organization and began to learn how to create and develop a successful resume writing. They have pre-written forms, templates, processes, strategies and sales scripts that are very helpful for a novice entrepreneur like me.

One of the big lessons I've learned as a small service-based business is to ask for customer testimonials and testimonials from day one. Fortunately, it wasn't long before my first referral came along. Where did this referral come from before I even had a client?! It turned out to be the resume service I initially contacted. It was also an epiphany moment for me as I quickly understood the value of forming partnerships to grow the business.

I still have a long way to go to get where I am now (lots of work to do), but it was a huge win at the time and a great start to my entrepreneurial journey.

Describe the process of starting a business

I would be lying if I said I had a detailed business plan. It's a long, slow, and sometimes difficult process. I must say that launching a service-based business is very different from launching a product. You really need to find a way to prove your worth and impress your audience.

After winning my first executive-level client, I quickly realized that writing resumes was a very time-consuming service. My first few resume writing projects took over 8 hours, so I decided to create a $150 executive package.

I started out offering only resume writing and have grown to include resumes, cover letters, and LinkedIn optimization. I basically created a niche in resume writing and my clients love my packages and pricing. Currently, I charge $499 for a junior resume, $549 for an intermediate resume, $599 for a leadership resume, $649 for an executive resume, $150 for a cover letter, and $349 for LinkedIn optimization.

Many of my clients tell me that "it was worth every penny" because they've had so many interviews and job offers.

My next big win was a feature article in a local newspaper. Due to the name of my business, this feature brought some negative reviews, but I wasn't put off by it. It also opened up a whole new audience and market for my business.

As an entrepreneur, you'll find that small wins add up and really energize your business, sparking new ideas and motivating you to keep going.

What has attracted and retained customers since launch?

Creating a brand that stands out in a saturated market was one of the best decisions I've ever made. I really created a unique and memorable logo, theme and identity. This is just the beginning.

After creating my brand, identity and mission, it was time to define my ideal client. More importantly, I want to do everything I can to make sure my clients have a great experience and the best possible ROI.

I quickly realized that spending money on pay-per-click advertising was a waste of money for a small service business. So, one of the best things I do is activate clients, who are brand ambassadors and advocates. I work hard to ensure my clients are happy and more importantly successful. Their reviews, testimonials, and referrals are truly the heartbeat of my company. Without them, I would not be where I am today.

Building a strong network and forming mutually beneficial partnerships is also very important. In addition to developing brand advocates, I also launched an affiliate program, which is a great way to spread brand awareness. As a small business owner, word-of-mouth referrals are everything. Affiliates can truly speak for your brand while helping you open up new markets, opportunities and communities.

what is your future?

Resume Assassins are doing great today. My SEO in Austin is fantastic, my clients are sending referrals almost daily, and my LinkedIn presence is growing. I also appear on podcasts with over 2 million monthly downloads, including Entrepreneurs on Fire, which have opened countless doors for me.

Over the past 5 years, my revenue has grown by over 25% year-over-year, and I have several plans to direct this growth to new audiences in 2023 and beyond. One of the initiatives I'm working on is working with social media influencers to launch advocacy campaigns to push "resume assassins" to new audiences.

Only 2% of women-owned businesses break the $1 million mark, so my long-term goal is to grow to $1 million in revenue while delivering a great customer experience.

Did you learn anything particularly useful or beneficial through entrepreneurship?

Some of the best advice you'll ever hear is to put the customer first. If you satisfy your customers time and time again, great things will come. It's also important to let yourself get out of your comfort zone.

When I started my business, I was terrified of stepping out of my comfort zone. I turned down opportunities and missed opportunities to grow because of fear. Remember, "Change begins at the end of your comfort zone..." Don't be afraid to fail, take chances, and learn along the way. Some of your decisions will fail miserably, while others will take your career to the next level.

Five years ago, I might have turned down an opportunity to be on the Entrepreneurs on Fire podcast out of fear. This year, I put myself out there more, took some risks, and got new opportunities, including appearances on several big podcasts in the coming months.

Advice for other entrepreneurs looking to get started or just getting started?

My best advice is to come up with an idea and execute it. I talk to a lot of people who want to start a company and they think they need to create a complicated business plan. While a solid business plan is very useful, you just need to start taking one step forward.

3563a9b74c966789b63a3c683b7903f2.png

Every entrepreneur learns by doing; I repeat, we don't know everything. You will encounter obstacles, you will need to develop some problem-solving skills, most of the time it will not be smooth sailing, and you will need to make difficult decisions every day.

During all these frustrating moments, you get your first win. Then you'll reap one victory after another. These victories will accumulate over time, and you will earn cumulative results.

Don't be afraid to start. Pursue your passion, achieve success, make decisions, overcome obstacles, keep going, and good things will come.

Be prepared to work hard every day. If you leave your 9-5 job, you have the potential to work 24 hours a day. This is worth it. I really look forward to each day, I love my life and that will never change.
