Network Slicing is a type of virtual networking architecture in the same family as software-defined network and network functions virtualization - two closely related network virtualization technologies that are moving modern networks toward software-based automation. SDN and NFV allow far better network flexibility through the partitioning of network architectures into virtual elements. In essence, network slicing allows the creation of multiple virtual networks atop a shared physical infrastructure.
每个切片要满足QoS、满足计费和策略。要共享硬件资源和传输资源，所以说，网络切片可是实现更低的网络时延、更快的网络上线和更好的用户体验。
那么目前的运营模式大多是基于APP的，即所有的切片只是位于应用层，应用层的共享单车、大众点评、美团等。将来的运营切片会更加深入到底层，硬件上的运营划分。谈到商业模式，就是B2B还是2C。网络运营商可以基于用户定制网路切片或者基于虚拟运营定制切片作为租赁，给不同的政企客户或者终端客户，这样就可以根据切片的弹性，拉通垂直行业。
3GPP目前的切片分为三个范畴：端到端结构，RAN和网络，切片管理。3GPP目前RAN侧的切片还处于待定状态；SA1主要做业务需求，SA2做功能和价格，SA5做相关的切片管理和编排，但都是TR。
