The best way to solve the world’s environmental problems is to increase the cost of fuel. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
The environmental problems are worldwide issues in recent years, with conflicting on what is the best way to cope with it. Some people suggest the best way to solve it is for government to raise the price of fuel. From my perspective, I do not agree with this opinion.
The first reason why this approach may not work is there is not just one environmental problem the word faces today. The advocators think raising the price of fuel can restrict people’s travel, which can limit the carbon dioxide emissions which leads to greenhouse, improving environment. However, they are oversimplifying the situation, because this method is only likely to slow down the rate of global warming and air pollution, without any other help to solve other major problems, such as water pollution, overpopulation, and intense farming. For these reasons, we need to find other solutions.
The second reason why this policy may not be the most appropriate is that we empathize the importance of the governmental policy and ignore the individual responsibility. Actually, the reason for environmental problem may involve the recognition that human activities become more and more aggravation, with the increasing population and economic advancement. Therefore, if we wish to find a long-term way to mitigate the problem, we should take more individual aspects into consideration instead of only depending on governmental policy. What government need to do is to launch a campaign to educate people of all ages about the environmental consequence to their actions.
To sum up, I believe that increasing the level of taxation on the fuel is a short-term method to solve only one environmental problem. If we want to make our planet a better place, education is the key to making this happen.
