Wireless communications is currently one ofthe fastest growing industries globally. At the same time, the ongoinginformation society evolution is seen as important for enhancing prosperity ofsocieties.The process touches many fields, and therefore there is a strong needto understand the developments of the two concepts and their relationships. Theobjective of this study is to provide interested readers with a conciseoverview to serve as a base for continued work and thinking. The study beginsby discussing the evolution of the information society concept, summarizesthecurrent understanding and identifies the key solutions required to make the visionsreality. The main technology developments that have led to the currentsituation are presented. Wireless communications is identified as a key enablerof information society. Next, the major trends in wireless communications areidentified and discussed, and the foreseeable development path of wirelesscommunications technology is outlined. Attention is given both to terminal andtransmission developments. Last, the forces influencing the user and marketadoption of technologies and innovations are discussed. The impact oftechnology in the process is emphasized.
