"Is thy face like thy mother's, my fair child?"
Lord Byron saw his daughter Ada for the last time in January 1816 when she was only one month old. In April he agreed to a formal separation from his wife Annabella and left England, never to return . In the opeing lines of the third canto of Childe Harold's Pilgrimage, published in 1816, he wonders what his daughter looks like. In 1820 he commented on Ada's portrait that she looked very like her mother.
