What was the good news?

The secretary told me that Mr Harmsworth would see me. I felt very nervous when I went into his office.

秘书告诉我说哈姆斯沃斯先生要见我。我走进他的办公室,感到非常紧张。我进去的时候

He did not look up from his desk when I entered. After I had sat down, he said that business was very bad.

He told me that the firm could not afford to pay such large salaries. Twenty people had already left.

I knew that my turn had come.

2.3 afford [əˈfɔ:d] v. 负担得起

can / could / be able to + afford + sth. 负担的起某事的费用

2.4 weak [wi:k] adj.弱的

week [wi:k] n. 星期。(同音词)

strong adj. 强壮的。(反义词)

2.5 interrupt [ˌɪntəˈrʌpt] v. 插话,打断

Don’t interrupt! 被插嘴。

inter rupt 在两者这间打断。

inter- 在两者之间(前缀不会改变词性)
internet n. 互联网。inter - net

international adj. 国际的。inter - national

3 语法讲解

3.1 宾语从句

1 宾语从句:一个句子做宾语
2 为什么用宾语从句:表达的信息越来越多。
3 宾语从句如何写。
I belive (that) you can make it.

4 that 分隔主句和从句连接,that 不做句子成分,仅仅只连接,可以省略。

3.2 直接引语 变间接引语

1 直接引语:有引号。(,""。不能用冒火)
2 间接引语:把引号去掉。把一个句子变成宾语从句。

3.2.1 陈述句变间接引语

步骤:
1 把引号打开,把句子放进来,变成宾语从句。
2 转化角度。(转化人称和时态)

他说:“我是笨蛋” 直接引语
He says,“I am a fool.” 直接引语
He says that he is a fool. 间接引语

He said,“I am a fool.” 直接引语
He said that he was a fool.间接引语

He said ,“I will go to Italy”
He said that he would go to Italy.

He said,“I went to Italy.” 说之前就去过Italy
He said that He had gone to Italy. 所以过去完成时。

He said,“You will recieve a thousand pounds.”
He told me that I would recieve a thousand pounds.

4 课文讲解

1 look up,抬头看。

2 could not afford to…,不可能支付,afford为“有能力做,常和can, could连用。

3 I knew that my turn had come.我知道这次该轮到我了。my turn指上文中有人被公司解雇这件事。my turn 轮到我了。

4 in a adj voice.
in a weak voice 用一个虚弱的声音
in a strong voice 用一个强壮的声音
