"QGIS Basic Skills" Opening Remarks

The first chapter of "QGIS Basic Skills" finally met with my friends, and it was much later than the expected progress. First, I would like to say sorry to everyone. Of course, there is a reason for this. In fact, the seemingly simple first chapter has gone through the process of three changes of its manuscript (not rewritten, but completely rewritten three times), and we also have a more profound experience of the hardships of writing text. I won’t elaborate on the twists and turns during the period. Our biggest gain is that we finally figured out the direction of creation and the angle of topic selection. There was no fuss in more than ten days.

After careful consideration, the follow-up creation of "QGIS Basic Skills" will adhere to the following principles:

(1) Low is not high

The QGIS knowledge base of the fans of the "QGIS Class" official account varies greatly. Some are deep users of QGIS and even have PyQGIS development experience, and some are not even sure where to download QGIS. In order to help more people, the content of "QGIS Basic Skills" should be written from the simplest and most basic content as much as possible and gradually deepened, hoping to make progress with more QGIS fans. Experienced friends can skip the simple content directly, and of course, you are welcome to click "I am watching" and share it with others in need. At the same time, in order to meet the needs of high-level friends, while serializing "QGIS Basic Skills", we will create some high-level content to share with you.

(2) Give consideration to concept and application

Taking into account the concept and application is the original intention of the creation of "QGIS Basic Skills", and it is also the biggest challenge. GIS itself is an applied subject, and it also contains many concepts of geography, cartography, and computing science. In the process of writing "QGIS Basic Skills", we will try our best to achieve the organic integration of concepts and applications. Guide applications with concepts and verify concepts with applications. This should be the main feature of "QGIS Classroom" which is different from traditional college GIS courses. It is difficult to really do this, but we are willing to work tirelessly for it.

(3) No limit on the push frequency

The length of the text required for different knowledge points is very different, and the writing time required is naturally completely different. If you create a fixed frequency of 2-3 days, you will inevitably sacrifice the quality of the content while pursuing progress. Therefore, we finally decided not to set a fixed push frequency, and push one after the creation is completed, giving priority to content quality. However, the overall plan for completing all creations before the end of this year remains unchanged, which requires us to work harder.

The first article pushed today is about the download and installation of QGIS. The content is very basic and is only for friends who need it. Those with experience can skip it. Subsequent content creation will follow up soon, let us work together to reach a thousand miles, thank you everyone!
