The difference between edge computing and CDN

CDN is the content distribution network. In order to increase the speed of users' access to the server, so that users can obtain the required content nearby, and solve the network congestion, CDN adds a new layer to the IP bearer network architecture to automatically distribute the content of the server to Distributed at the edge of the network and close to the service nodes on the user side, thereby improving the speed and efficiency of content delivery.

Edge computing and CDN are both related and different, and there are many similarities between the two. The first is that both are generated when data traffic and the number of users continue to increase, and user experience requirements increase. Both have high requirements for transmission response speed and are deployed at the edge of the network as much as possible. Edge computing applications and main processing nodes are generally distributed and deployed close to the user end, which makes it better than traditional cloud computing centers in terms of service reliability and response speed, while CDN service nodes can be fully reused These edge computing processing nodes provide major services such as storage and transmission.

The main difference between the two is that CDN improves the ability of nodes to transmit data by caching data, which is mainly realized by existing fixed network resources, and the focus is on transmission capabilities. The focus of edge computing is on computing capabilities. The application scenarios are mainly in mobile services, and services are provided on the edge side mainly through 5G network UPF, so the implementation of its applications mainly depends on mobile network resources. CDN is mainly used in scenes such as live video broadcasting, video-on-demand, and website access acceleration. The focus is on "acceleration", which is rarely seen in intelligent application scenarios.

Because edge computing focuses on computing capabilities and has the characteristics of intelligence and low latency, it is widely used in scenarios that require intelligence such as smart medical care and the Internet of Vehicles.

From the technical side, CDN was the earliest for content transmission acceleration
