I am very happy to share with you a series of innovations from Microsoft in Azure Disk Storage at the Microsoft Ignite 2021 conference. These innovations span key elements such as reliability, scale and performance, security, data protection, and cloud-native applications.

·        Reliability

In the preview version, use partitioned redundant storage ( ZRS ) to improve application availability on premium and standard SSDs

  1. Provides cross-region data synchronization and replication, so that the disk can tolerate partition failures that may occur due to natural disasters or hardware problems
  2. Enable customers to maximize virtual machine availability without the need for cross-region application-level data replication, which means that if the virtual machine in the affected region is unavailable, you can mount it in another region Virtual machine to continue using the disk.
  3. It can be used with shared disks to provide better availability for clusters or distributed applications (such as SQL FCI , SAP ASCS , SCS or GFS2 ).

·        Scale and performance

1. Achieve sustained higher performance by changing the level without interrupting the workload.

In 2020 Nian 11 months, Microsoft has announced a high-level SSD versatile performance layer, which provides customers with flexibility to expand disk performance without the need to increase the disk size by selecting a higher performance level, you can also change the layer , To restore the disk to the baseline performance tier to achieve higher performance and cost savings. Performance is critical for planned activities. In these activities, you need to achieve continuous improvement in a few hours or days. High performance and then return to normal performance levels. Now, in the preview version, you can change the performance tier of advanced SSDs without any downtime to the application even if the disk is connected to a running virtual machine.

2. Advanced SSD with improved disk performance on-demand and new disk blasting experience

Microsoft is now expanding disk blasting to support larger advanced SSDs and new enhanced experiences. On-demand blasting allows you to blast up to 6 times the prescribed limit (up to 30000 IOPS and 1000mbps ) whenever you need it . On-demand disk blasting is the most suitable task. Critical workloads, in these workloads, even if there are unexpected peaks, performance limitations cannot be tolerated.

·        Security and data protection

Azure Managed Disks provides end-to-end data encryption. The key is stored in the Azure keystore. You can choose to enable automatic rotation of your key. When you generate a new version of the key in the keystore, the system will Automatically update all managed disks, snapshots, and images to the new key version within an hour.

Protect your critical data through each disk backup. In the preview version, each disk backup will automatically create a snapshot at a fixed time, and use the backup strategy to retain the snapshot within the configured time, providing snapshot life cycle management, and you can easily manage the disk Snapshots do not require additional costs, custom scripts or any management overhead. This is an agentless and crash-free backup solution. It uses incremental snapshots to perform point-in-time backups of managed disks and supports daily Make multiple backups.

Each disk backup description :

  1. Back up faster and more frequently without interrupting the application
  2. Regardless of whether they are currently connected to a running Azure virtual machine, they support the backup and recovery of the operating system and data disks
  3. Cost-effective solution for backing up specific disks

·        Cloud native application

Use Azure Disk CSI driver applications to deploy and protect stateful Kubernetes applications.

Container Storage Interface ( CSI ) is a standard for exposing block and file storage systems to containerized workloads on Kubernetes . Using the GA of Azure Disk CSI Driver , starting from Kubernetes V1.20 , now you can:

  1. Take advantage of the latest Azure disk features by updating to the new CSI driver version without waiting for the Kubernetes release cycle.
  2. By Kubernetes API to create, manage, and delete snapshots, and disk volumes by Kubernetes create pre-populated snapshot data volume supply of new dynamic disk volume - provides a single interface to manage volumes and snapshots.
  3. Use from a plurality of pod of RWX original block volume

The Azure Disk CSI driver program can now be used in Kubernetes V1.20 with the AKS engine, and it will be available on AKS soon .
