Chromebooks can also run Linux programs. This possibility was already hinted at last February, but with Terminal apps appearing in the Chrome OS development channel, it could be coming soon . The irony at the moment is that this Linux-based Chrome OS doesn't support running Linux apps, just like Android, which uses a Linux kernel, and Google has modified it so that it has almost no Linux appearance.

But in the coming integration, Chrome OS may soon run Linux software directly, opening up the OS and Chromebooks to use cases beyond education or enterprise. Currently, some Reddit users have discovered and confirmed that the latest beta version of Chrome OS comes with a Terminal app, and advertises that the new version can run your favorite native apps and command-line tools, while warning that a 200 MB download is required to install this terminal application.

However, clicking "Install" has only failed at the moment. The fact that there is already a terminal app to install means the feature is close to being available, at least for alpha and beta testing. This 200 MB package confirms that this Linux implementation is based on a virtual machine , almost identical to the "Crostini" we heard a few months ago. This virtual machine strategy is actually similar to what Microsoft does with the Windows Subsystem for Linux. ,

The arrival of Linux support on Chrome OS has changed the operating system narrative. Primarily aimed at school and office use, this could give Chrome OS a new developer marketplace. Especially those software developers who only need a web browser and some Linux-based tools to create web applications.
