Today, I bring a robotic arm developed by Israeli researchers, called Minimally actuated serial robot. It looks like this:

Minimally Actuated Robot Arm

The industrial manipulator has a large workspace and is suitable for complex operations, but the tandem structure limits its end load and robustness . If there is a problem with the motor of one of the joints, the entire manipulator will be affected.

To solve this problem, researchers from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel developed a structure that only requires two drive motors to drive the motion of the robotic arm.

This kind of manipulator is mainly composed of passive series joint mechanism and active drive moving module. The moving module can move the series mechanism as a track, and can also change the relative angle of the two joints at the joint connection to achieve movement in different directions, so as to reach a wider working space.

The modular structure makes its structure easy to maintain , the actuator is easy to replace , and the cooperative work of multiple actuators can also improve efficiency. Since the overall movement of the robotic arm is not required, the overall energy consumption is also greatly reduced.

It can be widely used in space robotic arms, agricultural picking, industrial grasping and even in vivo surgical operations. Smaller robots are more flexible to operate.
