foreword

I wrote an article "What is Human" a few days ago, which is a reflection on how to form one's own essence. Based on the summary of the previous article, a conclusion is drawn that "the essence of human beings is a sophisticated and fragile machine".

Machines will always break down one day, and so will people. Death is something that everyone has to experience and face (at least it seems so for now). What does death mean, what will happen when it dies, what is it like before or after death for this person, maybe some philosophical propositions.

Thinking about death can be used to re-examine thinking about being alive. If we are going to die, how should we live? The objective fact is that our lifespan of just a few decades is so small compared to the history of the universe of more than 10 billion years.

One day, we will be forgotten, the traces of our existence will disappear completely, and even our civilization may be destroyed. So now, at this moment, at this moment, what should I do most? Is it to study and work hard, to write an article, to lie down and sleep, to go to the pier to order French fries, or to travel and see the beautiful scenery of the world?

So the rest of the time, how am I going to live?

Definition of death

Usually when we talk about death, we are mostly talking about "brain death". Because of some scenarios, your body may still be intact, but "the brain function has stopped active, the person has completely stopped thinking, and it cannot be recovered. This situation is called death. "

Suppose a person's heart stops beating because of some kind of acute heart disease. At this time, if the rescue is not timely, the blood circulation will stop, and the brain will slowly die due to lack of oxygen within a few minutes. If the rescue is timely, the blood can continue to circulate, and there is a chance to restore brain consciousness. So stopping the heartbeat is not a sign of death, brain death is.

Brain death does not mean that the brain stops thinking. We know that when we sleep, meditate, or fall into a coma, we will stop thinking, but the thinking of the brain after death is only temporarily dormant, and it can be easily resumed to continue thinking. Vegetative people also have a chance of regaining consciousness. If they can recover, they are not considered dead. If the key areas of the brain are irreparably damaged by current technology and there is no possibility of recovery, it is basically possible to declare brain death.

The elderly will say goodbye to this world due to the degeneration of body functions, resulting in insufficient blood and oxygen supply at a certain time, and the brain cannot continue to function.

nature of death

necessity

Death has some unchanging properties. One of the key properties is necessity, no matter who you are, king or beggar, you will die at some point. "In the face of death, all living beings are equal . "

Perhaps wealth, medical level, and physical fitness can delay the time of a person's natural aging and death, but this time does not seem to be infinite at present, and it is about a hundred years old. And it will cost so much that most people may still resign themselves to their fate.

unpredictability

And in addition to natural aging, there are many, many other things that may bring death, accidents, wars, diseases, natural disasters and so on.

As the saying goes: "Tomorrow and accidents, I don't know which will come first . "

Death is unpredictable. You don't know how you're going to die, and you don't know exactly when you're going to die, even through natural aging (suicide is out of the question).

Probability and Expectation of Death

As mentioned above, death is necessary, and when it will come is unpredictable. This means we don't know how much time we have left. How much time we have left determines how we live.

If I had a second left, I might just want to take another look at the world as much as possible and remember the good times I had.

If I had an hour left, I might video my loved ones to say goodbye.

If I had one more day left, I'd probably fly to give the person closest to me a hug, then sit down and write something I want to leave behind.

If I have one year left, I may choose to travel, see the scenery I saw first, and meet the people I want to see.

What if there are ten years left, fifty years left?

He still has a probability of death. The probability of accidents is extremely small, but the probability of death due to aging or diseases caused by old age is relatively high.

In mathematics, we have a word called "expectation", which is equal to the sum of probabilities of possible outcomes multiplied by their outcomes. Therefore, everyone's "expectation of living time" can be roughly estimated. I just searched. The current average life expectancy of Chinese people is 77.93 years old, which means that I am 28 years old, and I still have a "survival expectation of about 50 years" . After calculating the unexpected situation, it may be a little smaller than this value, but not will be much smaller. .

the value of living itself

I have read the book "To Live" by Mr. Yu Hua before. The protagonist in the book has been teased by fate and his relatives have left one after another, but he is still alive. It shows that "alive" is a valuable thing in itself.

The value of "living" is definitely "positive" , but there may be some "negative" things in life , such as poverty, disability, even abuse, imprisonment, etc. Will there be negative things that are greater than the positive value of "alive"? I think it is possible. In other words, ""living" is valuable in itself, and the value is very large, but its value is not infinite" , and there may be an upper limit. This also explains why some people choose to take their own lives.

Revelation of death to life

As mentioned at the beginning of the article, I wrote this article to further analyze how I should live the rest of my life through the analysis of death. Let me summarize some of my thoughts below.

Many things are not that important

You see, we are all going to die, and very soon (compared to the time the universe has existed) all traces of me ever existed will be gone. In fact, many things are not that important, especially those things that make you unhappy.

It doesn’t matter if you don’t have good academic performance; it doesn’t matter if you don’t do a good job; it doesn’t matter if you don’t earn money;

What is important? The important thing is to let yourself live happily in this limited life.

If I have the perspective of God, after a few years, all traces of me will be gone. Thinking back to myself who was sad alone late at night, I would smile and say: Hey, what’s the big deal~

Don't leave too much regret for yourself

Decades of life are actually not long or short. There are many things that can be done, but there is not enough time to do many things. When I get old and sick in bed, I will eventually have some regrets. If possible, I hope I have fewer regrets.

In my heart, I have listed some experiences that I want to try in my life, and I hope that when I am old, I will have a well-completed wishes checklist.

Decide how to live according to your expectations

Answer that question: Why don't I just quit my job and meet the people I want to see and travel the world? Because my survival expectation is 50 years, not a year.

With a 50-year survival expectation, from a long-term perspective, I need to sacrifice some current time and energy to obtain greater long-term benefits. I may need to study hard, work hard, save money. Maybe I will try my best to take care of the current emotions and feelings, but I will not completely care about the current happiness and completely ignore the long-term plans and goals.

Summarize

Finally, let's summarize. Make yourself happy, many things are not that big of a deal; try to find and satisfy your wishes, don't leave too many regrets; take into account long-term plans, don't just satisfy your current desires.

Finally, I attach a photo I recently took in Beijing that I like very much.
