This week, Microsoft rolled out the latest Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA) version 2305.40000.4.0 update. As part of this update, Microsoft began enabling file sharing in its Android subsystem for Windows 11, supporting system folders to upload pictures, edit videos, and more.

This feature is highly anticipated, because it also marks the latest step in Microsoft's compatibility with Android.

"We've been listening to the community, and many of you have been asking us to support file sharing between the Windows and Android subsystems," the WSA team said in a blog post. "So, things like uploading photos to social media apps Or editing a video in a creative application works seamlessly."

In preview, file sharing is turned on by default. However, users can also close it according to their own needs. If enabled, the user's Windows profile, such as "C:\Users\John Doe" is shared as "/sdcard/Windows" in the subsystem.

With files being transferred back and forth, there may be concerns about security and privacy. In this regard, Microsoft stated that it has taken corresponding protective measures:

  • Android apps can only view or edit their files with the user's permission;

  • When the application is opened, a system dialog box will pop up to request relevant permissions, and it can also be canceled at any time through the application settings.

"The Android subsystem also protects against malicious apps that will abuse your permissions, whether you install the app from the Amazon Appstore or the developer tools channel, scan all Android devices with your antivirus during installation applications and block potential risks," said the WSA team.

However, when it comes to file sharing features, there are a series of limitations, such as:

  • The subsystem can only use files in the Windows user profile folder. Windows system folders, Program Files, other users' folders, external drives, etc. are not supported.

  • Also, only files stored by the subsystem in /sdcard/Windows are available to Windows.

  • Windows hidden files and folders like AppData, Android hidden files/folders, and executable files (like ".exe") cannot be shared.

  • Cloud storage files must be downloaded to the user's local device in order to be shared.

Additionally, Microsoft is experimenting with a way to share individual files with specific Android apps even if folder sharing is disabled. Users can drag and drop files from File Explorer to an open Android application that supports file sharing.

Once upon a time, Microsoft shut down work on Windows Phone and Windows 10 Mobile, which meant its failure on the mobile operating system side. Today, Microsoft continues to open up support for Android and iOS on its own products, which may not be a good thing.

Given that Microsoft has rolled out this feature to all Windows Insider channels, file sharing support will likely roll out to all Windows 11 users in the coming weeks.
