In the 10-year career, network workers most often ask these 5 questions

Hello everyone, I am Lao Yang.

Many Internet workers are not very clear about their career plans. Some have thought about it, but they can't think through it, and some haven't thought about it at all. They only know how to blame the world.

Although it is painful to think about this process, it is very happy to understand.

Many people will say, what exactly does it mean to understand?

Then you need to know a prerequisite first, that is, the matter of "thinking about it" is relative movement.

Haha, how does this have anything to do with sports?

Because, the depth of thinking about a question is endless. Maybe you want to understand this matter now, and after a few years, you will have a new insight.

I have been in the industry for more than 10 years, and I may not have thought about many issues clearly, but compared to you, my experience will definitely give you a lot of inspiration.

As a network worker, what questions do you need to figure out?

That's what I want to share with you today.

If you want to understand, it will not only help your career planning, but also help you clear your mind and see things like promotion and salary increase.

Today's article reading benefits: "10-year 1v1 consultation quota for online workers (10)"

Maybe after reading this article, you will have more questions to answer. You can private message me and send the password "consultation" . Every week, I will select 10 private messages for 1v1 detailed Q&A to help you understand. Clear up your professional dilemma.

01 What are the main responsibilities of a network engineer?

Seeing this question, many people will subconsciously laugh: I have been an Internet worker for so many years, do I still not know the responsibilities of my job?

That being said, many people are just doing it without thinking.

This picture is specially compiled by me, and it is divided into two parts: the basic disk and the value-added disk.

Network engineer is a highly technical position with relatively high comprehensive ability requirements. For general network equipment debugging, troubleshooting, daily inspections, etc., you should be familiar with it.

But doing this every day and being the best you can get a raise?

If you do well in each of these four parts, you are only 60 points in the eyes of the leaders and the company .

Therefore, I specially added the "value-added disk" part, including:

Optimize the architecture to reduce costs and increase efficiency, optimize processes to improve security, provide business scenario value, and expand the influence of the network department.

Why is this your value-added disk?

If you think about it, these four major parts are the improvement content beyond the basic work.

Let's change to a simple example. If you are an assembly line worker, you do one action every day, which is to put things in bags.

You will think about what kind of bag the customer prefers?

You will think about what kind of knotting method is the most convenient for users to open?

Therefore, why some people are just workers on the assembly line all their lives, and some people can rise to a high level in the shortest time and get the salary and career they want.

The gap is here.

The same is true for the network worker industry. If you want to get a salary increase, a promotion, and be valued by the leader, you have to think differently, solve the leader's problems, and solve the company's stuck points.

Create more practical benefits (including but not limited to performance, efficiency, etc.), and you will have more room for value-added.

Who doesn't love employees, friends, family, colleagues and leaders who can help you solve problems?

You are right.

02 How to understand the overall structure of the network department?

In addition to our traditional structural division of labor, in fact, the business logic and structure of top manufacturers are more worthy of our understanding and thinking.

Generally speaking, the division of labor in SMEs looks like this:

But the division of labor of the top manufacturers looks like this:

Why do many low-level Internet workers always feel that their thinking and cognition are limited, mainly because they don’t know what their future looks like.

Perhaps from this picture, you can quickly understand something. This picture is also specially compiled by me, including the network and IDC product planning map.

Large enterprises and even leading manufacturers basically follow this framework.

It can be seen that the diagram consists of six parts: product system, demand management, value-added services, product range, product value and product blueprint.

Each branch of the six major points has a dedicated person, or even a specially established department to carry it out.

For example, the network troubleshooting and monitoring and alarming that many network workers usually do in their daily work are directly automated in large factories.

Why waste manpower on things that can be solved by automation?

03 How to measure the quality and level of network services?

Inexperienced people will definitely not be able to answer this question, so I especially like to ask this question during interviews, because it can screen out many unqualified network workers.

After all, this is a very important and critical point in a large Party A enterprise.

Taking Tencent as an example, if the network failure of WeChat business causes the number of WeChat online users to drop by 5%, millions of people will be affected.

Then, how to define whether the failure is caused by the business department or the network department is very particular.

During the interview, if I ask you this question, I might want to know more about things other than technical level, for example, how will you deal with conflicts with other departments?

How to stand firm in the conflict, clearly know that there is no problem in your department, and explain the real fault point with reason and evidence?

Having said that, how to measure quality and level? This problem can actually be achieved through quantitative indicators.

You can quantify some key network indicators, such as latency, bandwidth, jitter, etc.

Quantify them, display them in the form of data, refer to historical data, and define a benchmark value, and you can prove whether the quality and level of a network are normal or not.

Presetting in advance is an important key to this process.

I don't care about it at ordinary times, but when something happens, I can't speak clearly.

04 How to balance implementation efficiency and process specification?

Talk about an example of a project you have experienced before. Such a thing happened when I participated in a large-scale project in a large cloud vendor before.

There are two background development colleagues in the group. They found that there were two sentences missing in a piece of code, and they felt that it was not perfect, so they secretly added new code without any reporting or asking for instructions.

Unexpectedly, this operation caused more than 300 ECSs to go down at that time, and it affected the manufacturer's top customers...

The end of the two buddies is to say goodbye to the manufacturer who is a good welfare thief, and there is no chance of salvation.

This is a balance between implementation efficiency and process. Don't think it's really troublesome to apply for a change process or window...

In large companies, especially in large Party A companies, cumbersome processes are inevitable. If certain actions are performed in advance because the process is too slow, the consequences will be very troublesome.

It is the best policy to follow the big rules and give full play to one's technical ability and personality charm within the framework of the rules.

05 What value can I create for the business unit?

If you are in Party B’s company, you only need to do a good job in delivery, pre-sales and after-sales, and operation services, and you don’t need to think too much about this issue.

But if you are in Party A's company, this issue must be the number one issue of the top priority, and you have to think about it all the time.

Why do you say that?

Because in Party A's company, it is very likely that the company's main business has little or no relationship with the Internet department, such as the three popular industries of medical care, finance, and real estate.

These three industries are famous for their good treatment and high wages, and they are the ideal industries for many Internet workers.

But in such an industry, the network department may be just a supporting service department in many cases. If the value is not prominent enough, it will be easily marginalized.

In the current market environment, marginalization means elimination, which can be regarded as a small disadvantage of working for Party A.

The above five questions, I think, are the questions that an excellent Internet worker will definitely think about, and they are also very important questions that I have been struggling with.

Wang Yan is a blogger who pays for knowledge that I admire very much. He once said:

One of the most shocking truths he understood after he became an adult is that people can systematically acquire wealth through continuous learning and use of rationality and science.

This way of obtaining wealth is reproducible, others can do it, and so can I.

In this way, you can become an "expert in making money", and you can make money as you want, and the sense of stable control is great.

Since then, working and earning money has become more like a game to him than a painful struggle for survival.

I hope that one day, you can also experience this realm, and encourage each other
