Twists and turns|Doctor of Pharmacy was finally funded by CSC to go to Lund University in Sweden for 2 years of postdoctoral research

We first obtained an invitation letter from Brigham and Women's Hospital of Harvard University for Dr. W , and helped him successfully obtain CSC public funding, but the Harvard International Center refused to apply for the DS-2019 form on the grounds that the visa might be refused. Fortunately, we took precautions and applied for a 2-year postdoctoral invitation letter from Lund University in Sweden. In the end, we were successfully reassigned by CSC and went abroad after the visa. The whole process can be described as twists and turns.

Dr. W background:

Application Type: CSC Postdoctoral Program

Working background: Grade A hospital

Education background: Ph.D.

Research direction: Pharmacy

Academic background: 4 papers and 1 SCI

Difficulties in applying: I hope to go to a famous school

Application process:

Dr. W's application process can be described as twists and turns . At the beginning of 2021, Dr. W plans to apply for the CSC National Public Postdoctoral Program for that year, hoping to go to a top-ranked school in the United States. We analyze their education and work background, have theoretical knowledge and related skills of medicine and pharmacy, master cell culture, animal experiments, Western Blot, q-PCR, shRNA and other technologies, can engage in interdisciplinary research, and publish papers and participate in projects The background is also in line with the selection criteria for CSC public postdoctoral fellows, and we are confident that we can get a satisfactory invitation letter for him.

After some hard work, we have successively received invitation letters from Harvard University, Brigham and Women's Hospital , Vanderbilt University and a Canadian university . In contrast, Dr. W chose to use Harvard's invitation letter to declare CSC. A red list announced the result of the successful declaration. But in the admission process of American schools, we encountered layers of resistance. After submitting the relevant materials, the other party has not sent the DS2019 form for visa application for a long time. Harvard's application process is very slow, but we are more worried that due to the impact of the 10043 clause, even if we get the form, due to the funding background of CSC, there is a high probability that the visa will be rejected . So we took precautions, and after obtaining the consent of Dr. W, we began to apply for postdoctoral positions in European countries while waiting for news from Harvard.

Soon, a professor of medicine at Lund University in Sweden and an oncologist at the affiliated hospital responded positively to our application and sent an invitation letter after the interview. It is defined as a two-year postdoctoral position, the salary is paid by CSC, and the experimental funds are borne by Lund University.

At this time, the Harvard University International Center also sent a final confirmation email: In view of the fact that the visas of CSC funded personnel are basically refused, it is recommended to withdraw the appointment and terminate the follow-up 2019 form. Fortunately, we had obtained the invitation letter from Sweden in advance, so we asked Harvard to issue an unacceptable letter of explanation and submit it to CSC for reassignment procedures along with other documents.

The visa status of Swedish visiting scholars and postdoctoral fellows is a visiting researcher, and the receiving party needs to apply for an acceptance agreement (hosting agreement), and then go to the embassy for a visa and apply for a residence permit. The whole process took 4 months . During the waiting period, Dr. W was not idle. According to the requirements of the foreign director, he started remote online training until he successfully obtained the visa and went abroad to work. The whole process was full of twists and turns, but finally achieved the goal without any risk.

Tips:

1.  So far, CSC-funded American public-sponsored visiting scholars, postdoctoral fellows and joint training programs, which are included in the restricted list of majors (basically science and engineering), will most likely be rejected. Therefore, we suggest that it is best to avoid the United States when applying, so as to avoid the need to re-apply later, go through procedures such as reassignment, and thus delay the time to go abroad.

2.  The visa process for visiting students and postdoctoral students in Sweden is also cumbersome and time-consuming . We will write a separate article to introduce related strategies. Applicants are reminded to be prepared and allow time for processing .
