Update management improvements

Ensuring Windows Update restart times are consistent and predictable is a critical part of a successful update strategy. To improve restart predictability, we made the following changes to Update Stack Orchestrator:

  • The   Deadline   calculation for quality and feature updates is now based on when the client's update scan initially found the update. Previously, the   deadline date   was based on the update release date for quality updates and the restart pending date for feature updates.
  • The Deadline Group Policy setting specifying automatic updates and restarts was split into two separate settings to align with existing Configuration Service Provider (CSP) policies. The options in the Group Policy settings are the same for both feature and quality updates. Each new setting also has a   Do not automatically restart before grace period ends   option. The new Group Policy setting is:
    • Specify deadlines for automatic updates and restarts for quality updates
    • Specify deadlines for automatic updates and restarts for feature updates

  • To reduce the impact of the   Deadline   calculation change, the default values for feature updates were changed to the following:
    • Update/ConfigureDeadlineForFeatureUpdates = 2 (was 7)
    • Update/ConfigureDeadlineGracePeriodForFeatureUpdate = 7 (was 2)

changes and improvements

[Start Menu]

  • We're trying to make a small change to the Start menu, and some of these Insiders will see a badge on their user profile notifying them that some action is required.

[small parts]

  • We're experimenting with a few different title positions with the new icons for the Widgets board to see how best to optimize the Widgets board for our users. By using single-line icons, we aim to bring users consistent, clean and easily accessible icons that convey actions and functions through simple visuals.
