VMware Tools installation - taking Ubuntu as an example

  • What are VMware Tools used for?

VMware Tools is a set of utilities that improve virtual machine guest operating system performance and improve virtual machine management.

For example, here are some of the features that are only available after installing VMware Tools:

  • Dramatically improves graphics performance and delivers Aero on Windows Aero-enabled operating systems
  • Unity feature; allows applications in a virtual machine to be displayed on the host desktop like any other application window
  • Sharing folders between host and guest file systems
  • Copy and paste text, graphics, and files between virtual machines and host or client desktops
  • Improved mouse performance
  • Synchronize the clock in the virtual machine with the clock on the host or client desktop
  • Use scripting to help automate guest operating system operations
  • Enable guest customization for the virtual machine.

Although it is possible to run a guest operating system without VMware Tools installed, you do not gain many important features and conveniences.

You can use Windows Easy Install or Linux Easy Install to install VMware Tools immediately after installing the operating system.

For Windows Express Install or Linux Express Install, Fusion installs VMware Tools immediately after the operating system installation is complete. After you have installed the operating system in the new virtual machine using other methods (reboot the virtual machine when prompted), install VMware Tools.

Not all features are supported on all clients.

You can use the VMware Tools control panel to set various options to optimize the guest operating system for use in a virtual machine.

  • Specific steps to install VMware Tools
  1.  Click the menu bar above - "Virtual Machine" - "Install VMware Tools"
  2.  Click "Install VMware Tools" to enter the downloaded VMware Tools compressed package interface, then select the compressed package, right-click and select "Open with Archive Manager"

Yes, the shortcut for switching between Chinese and English under Linux is "Ctrl+Space (space)") - enter "tar -zxvf VMwareTools-10.3.23-16594550.tar.gz" (PS: "tar -zxvf" is the command, "VMwareTools -10.3.23-16594550.tar.gz" is the name of the compressed package. Everyone's compressed package name may be different. Please pay attention to modifications) - Enter "cd vmware-tools-distrib/" to enter the vmware-tools-distrib folder ——Enter the "sudo ./vmware-install.pl" installation command to install
  5.  After entering the above command, some query options will pop up for you to enter the corresponding words. Generally, the first one will ask you whether to continue the installation. The default option is no. At this time, you need to manually enter yes.
  6.  For other inquiries, you can generally press the enter key until you see enjoy, even if the installation is completed
  7.  Then manually restart the virtual machine and find the words "Virtual Machine" - "Reinstall VMware Tools" in the menu bar, indicating that the installation was successful.
