Updated on 2021.09.01, Microsoft officially confirmed that this version is the official version: Windows Server 2022 now generally available—delivers innovation in security, hybrid, and containers
On August 19, 2021, Microsoft released the Windows Server 2022 image download on VLSC and MSDN. Although it was not publicly announced, "released Aug 2021" means that the official version (sysin) has been released. This version is Build 20348.169, which is still based on Windows 10 core. It seems that the Windows 11 Server version is far away.
Windows Server 2022 features advanced multi-layered security, Azure hybrid capabilities, and a flexible application platform.
In this release, we're bringing security core capabilities to help protect hardware, firmware, and Windows Server operating system functionality from advanced security threats. Secure Core Server is built on technologies such as Windows Defender System Guard and virtualization-based security to minimize the risk of firmware vulnerabilities and advanced malware. The new version also provides secure connections and adds several new features, such as faster and more secure encrypted HTTPS connections, industry-standard SMB AES 256 encryption, and more.
Windows Server 2022 improves hybrid server management with significantly improved VM management, an enhanced Event Viewer, and many other new features in Windows Admin Center. Additionally, this release includes significant improvements to Windows containers, such as smaller image sizes for faster downloads, simplified network policy enforcement, and containerization tools for .NET applications.
Early intuitive experience
- Version 21H2, according to the name, the official version is expected to be released this fall (already released)
- Settings and control panels remain confusing, and Metro-style and Classic-style split designs remain unresolved
- Edge becomes the default browser (comes with version 86)
- Supports TLS 1.3, QUIC (HTTP/3), enabled by default
- Finally you can run Windows Terminal (Windows Server 2019 is not supported yet due to the limitations of the old 1803 version)
