Pulumi has added features such as drift detection and remediation, time-to-live (TTL) stacking, and more to its Infrastructure as Code (IaC) platform. Meanwhile, Pulumi CEO Joe Duffy pledged to continue to innovate in the potential HashiCorp-IBM deal.
Translated from Pulumi Launches New Infrastructure Lifecycle Features , author Darryl K Taft.
Pulumi , a leader in Infrastructure as Code (IaC), has launched a set of new features for its deployment workflow product - Pulumi Deployment - bringing new infrastructure lifecycle management capabilities to the platform.
These features include:
- Drift detection and repair
- Automate infrastructure cleanup using time-to-live (TTL) stacks
- Plan deployment
understand my drift
Drift is when the state of an organization's infrastructure differs from the state defined in its configuration. New drift detection and remediation capabilities enable users to continuously monitor infrastructure to detect and notify teams when actual cloud infrastructure deviates from the IaC source of truth. The company says drift can be automatically fixed by re-applying custom policies from the last known good state from previous deployments.
To track any deviations, users can set custom alerts using Slack , Microsoft Teams, or WebHook , or view drift through the dashboard in Pulumi Cloud.
TTL stack
At the same time, a new time-to-live (TTL) stack automatically cleans the infrastructure after a certain period of time based on flexible policies. This enables teams to enable self-service without worrying about outdated infrastructure and associated costs.
Pulumi co-founder and CEO Joe Duffy said the new features are highly driven by customers.
“Drift detection is more immediate and important, but the TTL stack gets my vote [as the most important new feature]. Many of our customers want to enable self-service cloud infrastructure for their developers, especially in artificial intelligence, data science era, but are afraid to do so for fear of costly waste,” Duffy told The New Stack. “With TTL stacks, this concern is eliminated and infrastructure teams now have full control to eliminate the risk of waste. So while it’s a little more subtle than drifting that everyone immediately understands, I expect TTL stacks to become a fan Favorite.”
Additionally, the Scheduled Deployment feature enables organizations to schedule deployment activities according to any cron schedule, enabling teams to automate repetitive workflows and scale systems with custom policy and action workflows, the company said.
Day 2
These new infrastructure lifecycle management capabilities are designed to improve the reliability, cost and security of Day 2 operations . Duffy said they enable platform teams to deliver cloud provision faster while maintaining necessary guardrails.
In fact, Duffy told The New Stack that the new capabilities show that Pulumi is solving more Day 2 operational challenges — a critical area for the company's largest enterprise customers. "We see them struggling here every day, and we're excited to provide them with an out-of-the-box solution so they can focus their efforts on solving higher-value business challenges," he said. “As we move from infrastructure as code to many products, infrastructure lifecycle management will be a key theme.”
For example, "At Oleria, we understand the importance of addressing privacy, security and data integrity issues. Earning and maintaining our trust is not only a responsibility, it is a fundamental aspect of our mission," Jim Alkove , CEO of Oleria explain. "Pulumi also understands how these properties impact cloud infrastructure," he said, adding that the new capabilities will help Oleria help its customers "securely manage access to distributed SaaS applications with adaptability and intelligence."
Free Pulumi Deployment
With Pulumi deployment, organizations can avoid building custom on-premises systems. The product includes git push deployments, staging review stacks, and UI-based deployments, and provides a REST API for custom workflows such as blue/green and multi-region deployments.
Pulumi has announced a new free tier of Pulumi deployments for use with these new features. The company believes these enhancements will help customers get the most out of their cloud efforts by enabling them to move faster with confidence.
About IBM and HashiCorp: "We will transcend innovation"
Meanwhile, Duffy addressed a big issue that could shake up the code infrastructure space, as IBM is in talks to acquire HashiCorp, another IaC leader.
“HashiCorp ceded IaC’s innovation agenda to us many years ago,” he said wryly. “IBM is obviously an incredible company with a rich history; however, they are best known for their world-class consulting and go-to-market capabilities , I expect this acquisition will open the door for Pulumi to continue to innovate and further accelerate market share gains."
Pulumi takes an innovative approach to IaC by allowing users to define infrastructure using common programming languages such as JavaScript, TypeScript, Python and Go. This enables developers to use familiar languages and leverage the power of those languages for abstraction, testing, and reusability.
The global infrastructure as code market size was estimated at USD 759.1 million in 2022 and is expected to grow from USD 908.7 million in 2023 to USD 3,304.9 million in 2030.
