The Redis open source community continues to grow, and Huawei Cloud injects new vitality into the Valkey project

Summary: As a Technical Steering Committee member of the Valkey community, Huawei Cloud will continue to participate in community building.

1. Background

On March 21 this year, Redis Labs announced that starting from Redis version 7.4, it would modify the original relatively loose BSD source code usage agreement to RSAv2 and SSPLv1 protocols, which means that Redis is no longer strict under the definition of OSI (Open Source Initiative) Open source products. Redis officials stated that there will be no changes in the developer community, and they will continue to enjoy the relaxed license under dual licensing. At the same time, all Redis client libraries for which Redis is responsible will remain open source licensed.

2. The establishment of Valkey community

At the Linux Foundation North America Open Source Summit held on April 16, the Linux Foundation announced that Huawei and many other manufacturers had officially joined the Valkey community and released a new version of Valkey 7.2.5.

During the summit, Huawei Cloud middleware expert Wen Hui was invited to Seattle to witness the release of Valkey 7.2.5 with initiators such as AWS and Google. More than 100+ business partner representatives and individuals from different industries, including existing Redis users, gathered together to conduct in-depth discussions on hot topics in the computer field such as AI, operating systems, and database security.

The Linux Foundation said that since the Redis project was founded in 2009, thousands of open source developers have made significant contributions to its growth and success. In order to continue to improve this important technology and allow unrestricted project distribution, the community created Valkey - an open source high-performance key-value store, aiming to continue the work of the Redis open source community. The project still adopts the loose BSD-3 open source license. At the same time, unfinished PRs and Issues from the Redis community will be transferred to the Valkey community for continued development.

“Valkey is built by long-time Redis contributors and maintainers, putting the project in the hands of a foundation rather than a company means Valkey will be community driven and there will be no unexpected license changes that undermine trust and Violation of open source competition principles."

--- Chris Aniszczyk, Chief Technology Officer, The Linux Foundation

3. Huawei Cloud’s contribution to the Redis community

  • Technical optimization and improvement

Huawei Cloud actively participates in technical discussions and contributions in the Redis open source community, and has put forward a number of optimization and improvement suggestions on issues such as the reliability, security, and functionality of Sentinel components. These suggestions have been widely adopted by the community, further improving the overall performance and application of Redis. experience.

  • Widely promoted and applied

Huawei Cloud not only regards Redis as an important part of its own cloud services, but also actively promotes Redis applications to users. By holding technical seminars, writing tutorials and case sharing, and cooperating with the community to design logical multi-tenant engine solutions, we help more companies and developers understand and master Redis, and promote the widespread application of Redis in all walks of life.

Huawei Cloud's contribution to open source communities such as Redis is a long-term and continuous process. It continues to inject new vitality into the open source community through its technical strength and innovative thinking, and promotes the development and application of open source technology.

At this summit, Huawei Cloud middleware expert Wen Hui and major contributors from AWS and Google also made an important decision: the Valkey Community Conference will be held in Seattle in May, at which time all Valkey community contributors will be invited and discussed Friends who are interested in the growth of the Valkey community will participate in this meeting onsite or online to discuss important issues facing the development of the Valkey community, major features to be introduced, and Valkey's long-term development plan.
