Report: Django is still the first choice for 74% of developers

JetBrains' PyCharm team, in collaboration with the Django Foundation, released the latest " 2023 Django Developer Survey " report based on a survey of more than 4,000 developers around the world, from September to October 2023.

Django is a high-level Python web framework that encourages rapid development and a clean and practical design, making it easier for users to build better web applications faster and with less code.

The report found that Django is still the web framework of choice for 74% of developers, but down from 83% last year. Valeria Letusheva, product marketing manager at JetBrains, said , "This small decrease indicates that Django developers are exploring other frameworks, possibly to take advantage of specific features or to adapt to changing project needs."

In addition, 31% of respondents chose React.js; followed by Flask (27%), FastAPI (25%), JQuery (22%) and Vue.js (21%).

83% of the respondents chose Python as their main programming language, followed by JavaScript at 68%, and HTML/CSS at 65%.

Django is the top choice for full-stack (73%) and API development (61%), with employed developers clearly shifting towards API work. The rise of HTMX may lead more developers to use Django in full-stack projects.

Survey results show that Django developers are increasingly favoring newer, simpler frameworks such as HTMX and Alpine.js, with usage of HTMX growing from 16% in 2022 to 23% in 2023, and usage of Alpine.js rising from 6% % increases to 10%. Although the use of mature JavaScript frameworks is still widespread - Vue at 19%, jQuery at 31%, and React at 35% - overall adoption has declined.

Over the past two years, Tailwind CSS has seen a dramatic rise in popularity, doubling in popularity, while Bootstrap's popularity has continued to decline. This trend shows that in web projects, people are increasingly inclined to use Tailwind CSS, a customizable, less prescriptive styling method.

Additionally, adoption of continuous integration tools is on the rise among Django developers, indicating an increasing emphasis on the role these tools play in improving development practices and productivity. GitHub Actions, in particular, has seen significant growth in usage, from 35% in 2021 to 45% in 2023. And 39% of Django developers are embracing infrastructure as code (IaC).
