Summary of saving money:
Global programming Q&A platform Stack Overflow struck a deal with OpenAI this week to monetize free user-generated content.
Community users opposed to the deal tried to protest by deleting their posted answers and questions, but they found that highly upvoted answers and questions couldn't be deleted because Stack Overflow believed it would remove collective knowledge.
So some users modified the answer content and turned it into a protest message. As a result, the mod restored the original answer within an hour and froze the user's account for seven days.
Stack Overflow and OpenAI recently entered into a new partnership to support their respective products.
Specifically, OpenAI will leverage Stack Overflow's Overflow API and work with Stack Overflow to improve model performance for developers using its products. OpenAI said ChatGPT will attribute the source when getting answers from the platform.
Stack Overflow will use OpenAI models to further develop OverflowAI and work with OpenAI to use insights from internal testing to maximize the performance of OpenAI models.
It can be seen that the new protocol allows OpenAI to access the Stack Overflow API as a data source, which has angered users who posted about programming questions.
A programmer named Ben posted on social media that he tried to delete his post to protest the deal between Stack Overflow and OpenAI, but encountered resistance from the platform.
Stack Overflow reversed his action - reinstating the post that Ben had deleted on his own initiative and temporarily banning Ben's account.
Platform administrators responded that posts on Stack Overflow are "collectively created" once published and can only be removed in "very special circumstances." Ben's account was subsequently suspended for a week, with administrators saying this was done to "avoid further misunderstandings."
Ben finally updated his post to express his frustration: "This move steals the fruits of labor of everyone who contributed to Stack Overflow."
Stack Overflow did not immediately respond to a request for comment for this story.
