The NetBSD Foundation has announced a new development policy focusing on code generated by AI technology. The new policy states that code generated by large language models or similar technologies (such as ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot) will be assumed to be contaminated (that is, the copyright is unclear and does not meet NetBSD's licensing goals) and thus cannot be submitted to NetBSD.
The second point in the NetBSD Commit Guidelines states:
If you submit code you did not write yourself, please double-check that the code's license allows import into the NetBSD source code repository and allows free distribution. Check with the author of the code to make sure they are the sole author of the code, and verify with them that they have not copied any other code.
Code generated by large language models or similar technologies (such as GitHub/Microsoft's Copilot, OpenAI's ChatGPT, or Facebook/Meta's Code Llama) is considered tainted code and may not be submitted without core's prior written approval.
Last month, Gentoo Linux also passed a resolution prohibiting the use of any type of AI tools or AI-generated content to promote Gentoo development. It aims to avoid some copyright and ethical issues caused by AI-generated code.
