Interior gateway protocol RIP and OSPF characteristics, differences

RIP:

RIP routing protocol is a traditional protocol for relatively small network, but the current rapid development of the Internet and the rapid expansion of the RIP protocol can not adapt to today's network.

RIP is a distance vector routing protocol

OSPF:

OSPF protocol is drawn up at the time of rapid expansion of the Internet network that overcomes many of the deficiencies of RIP.

OSPF is a link state routing protocol

the difference:

  1. a routing protocol RIP 15 hops (router or gateway) limit, if a RIP routing network spans more than 15 hops (routers), it considers the network can not be reached, but there is no limitation on the number of spans OSPF routers.
    2. OSPF supports variable length subnet mask (VLSM), RIP is not supported, which allows the RIP to the current lack of flexibility and variable length subnet mask IP address of lack of support.
    3. RIP protocol but not regularly broadcasts routing table for the actual situation of the network, the network bandwidth resources which is a great waste, especially for large-scale wide area network. Broadcasting updated routing protocol OSPF routing occurs only when the state changes, using IP multicast to send link state update information, which is to save bandwidth.
    4. RIP network is a flat network, the network no delamination. OSPF established in the network-level concept, in the autonomous domain can be divided into a network domain, the routing of broadcast limited within a certain range, to avoid wasting the resources of the relay link.
    5. OSPF uses the authorization mechanism in the broadcast routing to ensure network security.

Differences between the two above shows the characteristics of the OSPF protocol come from behind, its nature and complexity make it adapt to today's increasingly large Internet network and a major Internet routing protocol.
